Linear Interpolation
As a quick note, linear interpolation is one way of resizing images and expanding a single pixel value to a larger area. In the example below, you can see how rescaling by a factor of two requires individual, grayscale pixels to transform into a 2x2 pixel area whose values are a linear combination of the single, original pixel and its surrounding pixels.
